Eagle Point 54
Churchill 52
Thianne Deng-Gomes’ power lay-in with 5 seconds left in the game lifted Eagle Point (14-6) overall (4- 4) league play to a 54-52 win over the visiting Lancers of Churchill. Eagle Point saw a 12 point lead evaporate in the final 8 minutes of the 4th qtr. as the Lancers went on a torrid run led by their point guard Lily Poetzl 10 points in the 4th qtr and would finish with 17 points. At one point Poetzl scored 7 straight points to bring Churchill within 3 points of the Eagles who had led from the opening tip. Churchill would out score Eagle Point 19 to 12 in the 4th qtr. Morgan Statzer knocked down 4 free throws as well to add to the run. Brooklyn Moody hit a 3 to give Churchill a brief lead at 51-50, before Thianna Deng-Gomes added two free throws of her own to tie the game at 52-52. Coming out of a timeout the Eagles swung the ball around to Jill Garlitz who dribbled hard to the right to feed Deng-Gomes who had been a force all night and powered the ball up for a lay-in with 5 seconds left to give the Eagles the lead. Thiana Deng-Gomes poured in 21 points to lead all scorers. It was a great assist from Garlitz to Thianna. We had been talking to the girls all night about sharing the ball and seeing the open person. The last time we played this team Morgan Dole had 20 points so we knew they would make a conscious effort to take Morgan away and she was held to 2 points, but other players stepped up to help power the win.
