After a successful fall of cyclocross, the Southern Oregon University cycling team has entered the road race portion of its schedule.
The Raiders ended their three-month hiatus Saturday with an 88.8-mile road/grave race at the Huffmaster Hopper in Maxwell, Calif., where Elias Lawson placed 30th in 6 hours 20 minutes 5.99 seconds.
They’ll be in action again on March 4 at the Shasta Gravel Hugger, another road/gravel race, in Montague, Calif. – the first of four remaining races leading USA Cycling Collegiate Road Championships May 4-7 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Lawson highlighted the team’s efforts during the fall with an eighth-place finish on Nov. 5 at the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association Cyclocross Championships in 43:01.1. He earned a pair of victories in the Southern Oregon Outlaw Series, on Oct. 22 and Nov. 12, and had a 10th-place finish at the Cyclocross Crusade Races on Oct. 29 in Cascade Locks.
Aaron Bailey led SOU in second place of 24 at the Cyclocross Crusade Races with a time of 45:52, and he went on to pick up a win in the Southern Oregon Outlaw Series on Nov. 19. He’d also placed top-three in both of Lawson’s victories, and was 10th at the OBRA Cyclocross Championships.
