The long lasting rivalry between South Medford Panthers and Sheldon Irish proved to be true once again tonight. The energy for both teams was electric and fast paced. Both teams shot pretty evenly in the first half overall with South Medford shooting 44% from the field and Sheldon shooting 40%.
Sheldon made a huge surge in the third quarter to put the South Medford crowd at the edge of their seats. South Medford went on a cold spell shooting 20% from the field, and Sheldon went on a 15-8 run to put the game within six at the start of the fourth quarter.
The game was within as much as four points, but it wasn’t quite enough to prevail. With a few key defensive plays from freshman guard, Taylor Young, and sophomore guard, Sara Schmerbach midway through the fourth quarter, South was able to change the momentum and finish the game with a nine point victory. Donovyn Hunter led the way in scoring with 21 points and also added in 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Tatum Schmerbach added in 10 points and 5 rebounds. Kendall hit two big free throws at the end of the game tallying a total of 8 points. Taylor Young contributed 8 points and a great defensive effort with 5 steals.
Sheldon dominated the defensive glass claiming 28 to South’s 16. Morgan Raleigh led Sheldon’s scoring with 15 points and Diamond Wright adding 13. Big time rebounders tonight for Sheldon were Beaux Bruegman and Kinley Pappas combining for 19 of their 34 rebounds.
